Eviden joins the FP2-MORANE-2 consortium to deliver key components and contribute to the testing & validation of the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS)

Paris, France – April 30, 2025 – Eviden, the Atos Group business leading in digital, cloud, big data and security, today announces that it has been selected to join the landmark MORANE-2 (MObile radio for Railway Networks in Europe-2) consortium, which is responsible for extensive testing and validation of the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) technology under real-world conditions.

FRMCS aims to ensure seamless communication across a greener and more efficient transportation system, as envisioned by the European Union. It is a key component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), designed to enhance digitalization and railway capacity for competitive passenger and freight rail services across Europe.

The MORANE-2 consortium, led by the International Union of Railways (UIC), includes the European Rail Supply Industry (UNIFE), 11 European Railway infrastructure managers (ADIF, Banedanmark, Bane Nor, Deutsche Bahn, Infrabel, Network Rail, ProRail, RFI, SBB, Trafikverket and Väylävirasto), several industry suppliers, and 2 mobile network operators (KPN and Telia).

This 34-month pilot project aims to ensure a safe and smooth migration from the legacy GSM-R (which is approaching obsolescence by 2030) to the new 5G-based FRMCS through field tests in four countries (Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden). These tests will follow defined use cases on both conventional and high-speed lines, as well as in border-crossing conditions, before large-scale commercial deployments.

Eviden teams will collaborate with key FRMCS stakeholders, especially with three European research laboratories, Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Germany,  ADIF in Spain, and UIC to drive the project’s success.

Eviden will leverage its systems integration expertise and cutting-edge solutions to deliver three key components of the FRMCS Service Stratum, bridging the transition from GSM-R to FRMCS:

• MCx Server: A core component that manages 5G-based mission-critical communication services (MCPTT, MCVideo, MCData), ensuring secure and reliable connectivity for users in critical rail operations;
• IWF (Interworking Function): A gateway ensuring interoperability between GSM-R and FRMCS, as well as interworking with public and private networks;
• Dispatching System: A mission-critical communication platform enabling real-time voice, video, and data exchange between train drivers, control centers, and railway staff.

Eviden is one of only two companies providing the MCx Server and the only company delivering the IWF within the FP2-MORANE-2 framework.
