What is a Cab Radio (MCx Gateway) ?
The Cab Radio (MCx Gateway) is an onboard communication device that connects the train’s audio and communication systems with the railway’s operational communication network. It acts as a gateway between onboard equipment and the MCx server, enabling secure train-to-ground voice communication.
The system can operate as a standalone unit with an integrated modem or be connected to a third-party communication system via Ethernet, making it adaptable to different network infrastructures such as 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi.
The Cab Radio supports both automatic and manual train operations. In driverless environments, it can control the onboard intercom system through standard interfaces. In trains with a driver, it enables group calls and point-to-point communication via a dedicated HMI installed in the driver’s cab.
Designed for railway environments, the solution complies with EN 50155 and EN 45545, integrates a Linux-based MCx client, and supports secure authentication and encrypted communications. It also allows fleet-wide monitoring and configuration through centralized maintenance tools.
