JUPITER – The first European Exascale supercomputer

Teaming up with trend-setting technology partners, a French-German consortium composed of Eviden and ParTec, was awarded a contract by EuroHPC JU to deliver the ambitious project, marking a pivotal moment in Europe’s pursuit of technological sovereignty. JUPITER will be hosted by the Jülich Supercomputing Centre. Engineered to tackle the most intricate scientific simulations and AI applications, JUPITER promises unparalleled computing power while prioritizing energy efficiency — a critical aspect in today’s eco-conscious world.

JUPITER will have three times the computing capability of Europe’s current most powerful supercomputer and will provide the equivalent power of 10 million modern desktop computers. The overall system will require the space of about 4 tennis courts and will use over 260km of high-performance cabling, allowing it to move over 2,000 Tb per second, the equivalent of 11,800 full copies of Wikipedia every second. It is designed to tackle the most demanding simulations and compute intensive AI applications in science and industry. Applications will include training large foundation models for generative AI, simulations for developing advanced materials, creating digital twins of the human heart or brain for medical purposes, validating quantum computers, and high-resolution simulations of climate that encompass the entire Earth system.

The unique Modular Data Center approach

One of the key challenges in realizing JUPITER’s vision lies in its data center infrastructure. Regulatory compliance, energy efficiency, resilience, and budget constraints add layers of complexity to the project. Recognizing these challenges, Eviden embraces a Modular Data Center (MDC) approach — a paradigm shift in computing infrastructure design. By leveraging pre-built, interchangeable modules, Eviden ensures flexibility, agility, and scalability, enabling seamless updates and replacements without disrupting operations.
Eviden’s MDC solution not only accelerates deployment but also optimizes costs — a crucial aspect for a project of JUPITER’s magnitude. By aligning expenses with computing and energy needs, JUPITER can incrementally expand its capabilities while minimizing upfront investments. Additionally, the modular design aligns with eco-efficiency goals, blending advanced cooling technologies with heat reuse mechanisms to minimize environmental impact. Through its manufacturing facility in Angers, France, Eviden ensures meticulous integration and testing of JUPITER’s components, further enhancing reliability, and reducing installation risks.

Pioneering Exascale Performance Through Collaborative Innovation

With its MDC approach to achieve Exascale-class performance, JUPITER exemplifies the collaborative efforts of EuroHPC JU, Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Eviden and ParTec. It underscores Europe’s commitment to leadership in the global HPC arena. By embracing Exascale and sustainability, JUPITER heralds a new era of technological excellence and reinforces the European digital sovereignty — a testament to Europe’s firm dedication to continuous innovation.
